About the Lab
The lab will explore materials science with a focus on career skills in aerospace, robotics, engineering and more. In addition, the Lab creates new opportunities for teaching STEM subjects, manufacturing methods, trade skills and more through year-round daytime and afterschool programs.
With this new access to STEM education and specialized equipment students in South LA will have the opportunity to participate in challenges/competitions and achieve placement in STEM internships, heightening their eligibility for entrance into the most elite and competitive engineering colleges and universities.

Product Innovation &
Material Science Fellowship
The Sola Foundation x Howmet Aerospace Foundation Product Innovation & Material Science Fellowship is a hands-on, 18-week program for high school students (11th and 12th grade) in South LA. Programming will blend creativity and technical skills in a makerspace environment that includes designing sneakers, bringing 3D models to life, and building toy products. Students learn to design, prototype, and solve real-world problems through tools like laser cutting, CNC machines, 3D printing, sewing, and electronics. The program equips students with material science and design thinking knowledge, preparing them for future careers in innovation and technology.
Upon completion, students receive a stipend to continue development of their product
